Sophie accompanied her grandmother back to the house before making an excuse to drive back into town. There was a bohemian shop at Cannery Row that she wanted to explore, hoping to find a gift that would fit perfectly in Charli’s apartment. It would also get her out of the house and away from her mother, who was still whining about Rob not spending the morning with the family. You’d think no one else existed the way her mother went on about her firstborn.

Sophie parked adjacent to the Monterey shoreline and crossed the road among a throng of tourists. She found herself smiling at the vacation atmosphere the small town conjured. She couldn’t wait to bring Charli back with her next time.

“Hey, sis!” A familiar deep voice interrupted her thoughts.

Sophie turned, a smile forming on her lips as she took in her brother's solid frame. “Rob! What are you doing here?”

He laughed and stepped forward to hug her. “Same as you, I believe. Grana’s birthday, from memory.”

Sophie hugged him before pulling away. “You told Mom you wouldn’t be here until lunch at two.”

He rolled his eyes. “I couldn’t put up with a morning of Mom grilling me about Monica.”

Sophie looked over his shoulder into the cafe he’d come out of. “Where is she?”

“At the hotel. I dropped her there to get ready for lunch. We were already here when I called Mom. Don’t tell her, okay?”

Sophie nodded. “Do you want to get coffee or something? I haven’t seen you in so long.”

Rob rolled his eyes again. “What? So you can grill me about Monica instead of Mom?”

Sophie laughed. “Someone has to! No, that wasn’t my plan. I am looking forward to meeting her, though. I’m pleased for you, bro.”

Rob grinned and rubbed his hands together. “Okay, I’ll join you for coffee in that case. I’ll grill you instead.”

Sophie followed him toward the Old Monterey Café, where they were quickly ushered inside and seated. Sophie smiled as she took in the mismatch of old photos, clocks, and ornaments adorning the cafe’s walls.

“Been here a few times, haven’t we?” Rob said.

Sophie nodded. It was one of Grana’s favorites and where they often gravitated to with their grandmother. “We have, but let’s talk about your favorite topic.” She grinned. “You. I’m not going to grill you, but I will ask this. Is it serious?”

Rob nodded. “She’s one of a kind. Special. Different from other women I’ve dated.”

“In what way?”

“Independent. Knows her mind. Spectacularly gorgeous.”

“That last one’s usually a prerequisite for your women.”

Rob laughed. “Can’t help it if gorgeous women fall at my feet.”

Sophie smiled. It was true, Rob’s girlfriends were generally gorgeous. That surprised her. She wasn’t being nasty. But Rob wasn’t exactly in the best physical shape he could be in. Slightly overweight, receding hairline, and a look she’d describe as generally unhealthy. Yet his girlfriends were often models. It didn’t add up, other than Grana’s eye-rolling, and comments that they were gold diggers with few brain cells. But according to Grana, Monica fell into a different category.
